One especially important work of the artist’s late period is the Mengele-Totentanz (Mengele Dance of Death), an ensemble of 18 mechanical sculptures. The piece derives its eerie, macabre atmosphere from the creaking and clanking of the rusty machines compounded by the dramatic play of shadows.
