Pianist and composer Kris Davis expertly combines influences from free improvisation, jazz, contemporary classical music and world music to create an unmistakeable personal sound. This week, as Artist in Residence at bird’s eye, she gave the audience a first-hand experience of how she pushes boundaries and effortlessly traverses all genres with elegance and brilliance. At the museum, too, she captivates listeners as part of a trio with the virtuoso Robert Landfermann and the great Nasheet Waits, delightfully breaking away from the traditional trio format alongside her fellow musicians. While everyone contributes on an equal footing, they explore the possibilities of mutual communication with a keen sense of the underlying dynamics and tension.
