Sound in a Bottle
A Competition

Accompanying the ship's voyage, we encouraged people to get creative and create their own audio pieces on the theme of the sound of water as part of the Sound in a Bottle competition. Whether it was the discovery of special sound sources of water or one's own splash compositions – there were no limits to imagination. The goal of Sound in a Bottle was to encourage (active) listening and experimentation – from making music to coming up with an imaginative title for one’s own sound contribution. On the website's route map, the uploaded contributions could be discovered and the origin of the sounds could be guessed, just like an acoustic message in a bottle.

Parallel to the competition, ten musicians and artists were invited in cooperation with Radio X to create their own sound contribution – an artist edition – on the theme of the sound of water.

The winners of the selected entries received a travel voucher for the train and two nights in Basel in a three-star hotel on the weekend of 24 to 26 September 2021 with one accompanying person each. Once in Basel, there were further surprises at the Museum Tinguely as guests of honour for the anniversary celebration. The trip was made possible by Basel Tourism, Swiss Travel System and ibis Styles Basel City.

Jean Tinguely was a cosmopolitan who sent colourful letter collages his friends all over the world to stay in touch. In the spirit of these postal greetings is: Sound in a Bottle – an acoustic greeting with water sounds.
